MY STORY

“Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful.”

Hello again, I’m Susanna Ronner

Few aspiring graphic designers enter this highly competitive field thinking they’d like to focus on scientific content. It’s a highly specialized, daunting area of marketing communications that few designers know about or find attractive.

So over 25 years ago, when the owner of a successful agency specializing in agri-marketing approached me about breathing new life into a client’s technical content, I was both skeptical and intrigued.

“You want me to design and produce a symposium ‘proceedings booklet’ for a major pharmaceutical company? What’s a proceedings booklet? Do livestock and poultry really catch the flu? And who actually reads this?”

The mind-numbing assignment was a vast departure from the more mainstream work that had filled my portfolio. I reluctantly took on the project with the hope it would present new challenges and allow me to bring my design eye to new sectors.

And wow, did it ever.

Decades later, I’ve been the lead graphic designer for many science-based marketing campaigns — handling everything from print and digital magazines and monographs to proceedings booklets, conference posters, technical brochures, product bulletins, websites, mobile apps,

and graphics for social media.

I find it gratifying to work with scientists, marketers and editors to transform dense, data-driven content into clear, attractive, stimulating, branded pieces that bring clarity and visual excitement to their technology.

It’s also energizing to know that the print and digital pieces I’ve designed help doctors and consultants make informed decisions that help the health and welfare of animals.

The German industrial designer, Dieter Rams, once said, “Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful.”

That’s the approach I take with every scientific publication I create. It’s also what led me to create Clear Science Design.

I welcome the opportunity to talk about your needs and bring my experience to your scientific communications program — so let's connect!
